Dear Bellevue Community,
As the year winds down to a close I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you for welcoming me into this wonderful community. Bellevue School is truly and caring and supportive community which places student learning as our top priority. To this end, the school has begun Active Recess, consistently implemented Common Dress, and purchased new curriculum in math and language arts. These changes are all designed to help students focus on their primary goal; learning and critical thinking.
Bellevue School partnered with Cool School to implement Active Recess, a new recess program which emphasizes student movement and student choice during recess breaks. Research has proven over and over again that when students are physically active they experience fewer social problems, are better able to concentrate on their school work, and their grades improve. Our Active Recess program has been so successful that we have become a Model School for the County! Thank you Coach Knight for helping us implement this wonderful program so successfully!
Asking students to arrive to school prepared to learn and wearing Common Dress has been another focus of our school year. Wearing Common Dress is important because it helps students avoid clothing distractions and concentrate on their learning.
This year Bellevue School began a new language arts program, Wonders. Wonders is aligned to the new Common Core Standards in language arts and emphasizes the foundational skills and critical thinking skills students need to succeed. The Kindergarten and sixth grade classes also piloted math programs which we will use for the 2014-2015 school year. Our goal is to give students the skills they need now and in the future
It truly has been a great year and one which is filled with many fond memories, but as a busy school we need to continue to look to the future, keep what works, and make the improvements our students need and deserve. For example, this year we held Literacy Nights to share our new language arts program with parents. Next year we will have Literacy Nights and Family Math Nights. Bellevue School also celebrated literacy by inviting guest readers to join us for Read Across America Day. We will continue this tradition next year and ask parents and community volunteers to celebrate math and science with us as well.
Bellevue School also plans to continue it’s emphasis on academics and academic challenges. Pictured above are winners of our Garden Challenge Project, Spelling Bee Participants, and Science Fair Projects. Next year our goal will be to expand our science fair into a wonderful evening event which celebrates student achievement, offers group challenges, and allows students to teach their parents the science concepts they have learned!
We also plan to continue to improve our campus and expand our school garden. Keeping our campus painted, clean, and weed free reminds students that our campus community is their home away from home and that students deserve to learn in a beautiful place. Expanding our school garden increases learning opportunities by adding an outdoor classroom and science in action to our curriculum.
Finally we will continue to celebrate our students and staff. Bellevue School’s staff is dedicated to the well being and advancement of all of our students. I look forward to another great year as your principal and welcome your input as we continue to make changes designed to improve our school community and increase learning opportunities for your child. Thanks and see you “next year”!
